October is Adopt-A-Dog Month

We often talking about the problem of pet over population in the United States and the effect it has on shelters. According to the American Humane Association, each year, approximately 8 million stray and unwanted animals are taken in by shelters across the country. About 3.7 million of these animals must be euthanized because good homes cannot be found for them. In fact, shelter euthanasia is the leading cause of death for both dogs and cats in the United States.

As a way to bring attention to the over population problem, the American Humane Association designated October as Adopt-A-Dog Month. Adopting a dog from a shelter brings the joy of pet ownership to the adopter and a chance at a second life for the lucky dog.

But, it is important to be ready to bring in a new four-legged family member. Too often a family will adopt a pet and love them – at first. Then, once the “new” wears off and the owner realizes taking care of a pet takes more time and responsibility than they anticipated, the pet ends up neglected or abandoned again.

Adopting a new dog is a major step, one that will affect your family and your lifestyle for the duration of the dog’s life. Before you bring your pup home, make sure you have stocked up on essential supplies like food, bowls, toys, grooming tools, collar and leash with identification tag and a create with cozy bedding. Also, pet-proof the house or the area where you will keep the dog by making sure all electrical cords are tucked away and all potentially harmful items are out of paw’s reach. Most importantly, make and appointment with your veterinarian for a wellness exam before you even pick up your new canine.

A local shelter is the perfect place to find dogs of every type, size, age and personality. If you prefer a particular breed that isn’t currently available at a shelter, go online to find a breed-specific rescue group in need of forever homes for their furry friends.
