The truth about cats and dogs

Ok, for those of you saying, "Hey that was a movie," I know it was. But, you can't copyright a title so... I'm using the title. But my post won't be about the movie.

It's about the truth about cats and dogs. Here are 5 truths blown open for their falseness...from MY experience, nothing else:

1. Dogs are not better than cats, and vice-versa. You can have both and love them both just as much. Carmie and Wabby

2. Dogs are not more trouble than cats, although you do have to give them a bit more attention. Cats may seem solitary and standoffish, but they need attention, too. Especially young cats. PLAY with them; dogs and cats.

3. You can't walk a cat on a leash. Oh, hogwash. If you start them young, you can get a harness and walk your cat, too. Or, put it in a stroller. Now, mind you...avoid those times during the day that other pet parents have Fido out - that could cause a bit of an upset. But, yes, you can walk your cat. Much safer than allowing them to run about on their own.

4. Cats live longer than dogs. This is, technically, true. If a cat is housebound and well cared for (regular vet visits, vaccinations, good nutrition and lots of love) they can live to be 20+. My cat is 16 and showing no sign of going over the Rainbow bridge anytime soon. On the other hand, dogs - especially big dogs - tend to decline around age 10...and if they last to 13, that's good. My dogs routinely last to 15 or 16. It's all in the love, attention, and vet care you give them.

5. Cats and dogs hate each other. Ok, out in the world, dogs do chase cats, as a rule. But, in your house, there is no reason your dog and cat cannot become best friends. In fact, dogs have been known Pets-in-need-clinic-logoto adopt all manner of other creatures - including birds and rabbits, and cats have been known to be quite happy alongside a pet mouse. It's all in the early training, the careful attention to the behavior between the pets, and the recognition that cats and dogs both like to chase things that run... so, even if they are friends with your pet turtle, don't leave them alone together for hours and hours.

That's enough. Little thoughts on a Saturday before I head off to the Pets In Need Clinic. Have a great weekend!
