Adopting a Greyhound: Mix it with Lots of Love

My daughter in CO lost her beloved dog, Reznor, right around Christmastime last year. It was a sudden andReznor  shocking end. Reznor had a bone disease which my daughter (and even the vet) did not know about. Reznor was part-greyhound and one of the best pets a person could have. We all loved Reznor - and his passing was very hard on us. As it always is, on pet owners.

Reznor's health issues speak to the need for pet health insurance. No, he did not have any, but...neither did we consider it, back then. Until Purina came up with this health insurance, we weren't sure about this new way to protect our pets. Insurance is certainly high on our list, these days.

Today, my daughter has a delightful full-bred Greyhound named Twiggy. Twiggy is quite a handful. As with all puppies, Twiggy required a whole lot of care in the beginning. He soon made it known that being left home alone, even in his doggy-crate, was unacceptable!

Twiggythepuppy I congratulate my daughter on her love and patience, because Twiggy certainly tried both, during those early days. As this site about adopting Greyhounds notes, these amazing dogs are quite unique. They can be skittish or rambunctious. Some may not want to be around other pets, including cats. Because of their build, they need to be out of the heat and cold, and a good diet is essential because they tend to be thin, as is their nature.

I'm using Greyhounds as an example. ALL dogs, adopted out of a shelter or rescue home, need special care and attention. Considering pet health insurance is a positive thing to do. Having it helps you focus on the happy, healthy life you want your dog (and cat) to have.

One of the reasons I am writing this post, is because I found this article at the Houston Chronicle, about Greyhound Planet Week. The story says it's the Sixth Annual Celebration of the Hounds. I find it fitting.

I miss Reznor when I visit my daughter in CO. Twiggy is delightful, but...Reznor was one of a kind.

Here's to many happy years with Twiggy - and to the fond memory of a smart, kind, and gentle dog that left us too, too early. Reznor - you are always in our thoughts.
