Just discovered World Rabies Day. This year it's on September 28th.
The information came via my Google alerts on pets. MarketWatch, an online resource I use for many things, has a good article about this - with a reminder to vaccinate your pets.
My dog, Carmel, will be going for her yearly vaccinations this week, but her rabies isn't due for two more years. Rabies' vaccinations are not something I would EVER neglect...for Wabby, my cat, or Carmel, my dog.
In the MarketWatch article, they say, "Rabies is still a major threat worldwide." That was a surprise to me.
This is as much for OUR sake as humans, as it is for the animal's sake. No matter where you live, I bet there are foxes or raccoons, or deer, around. We, as humans are stretching civilization into their habitats, more and more. Which leads these creatures to wander into our backyards, searching for food. In my area, here in Greece, NY, we hear about it all summer long. Not a lot, but at least two or three times... the news cautions us to be on the lookout for "wild" animals in our garbage.
The World Rabies Day website is full of excellent content and information on this. And, vaccinations are something you can learn more about at PurinaCare®, also. Having insurance for your dog or cat, starting it at the beginning (when they're puppies and kittens), can be a life-saver. For them, and for you.
I'll ask Dr. Larry to talk about this in our next podcast. Stay tuned.
